Photoshop for Illustrators: The Basics

A straightforward approach to beginning illustrating in Photoshop.

Photoshop for Illustrators: The Basics is the class I wish I had back when I was fumbling around, trying to gain an understanding of how to use Photoshop in my illustration work.

If you're brand new to Photoshop or if you need a refresher after a long time away from Photoshop, this is the class for you. We'll start the beginning with setting up your workspace and creating documents and work our way through the various tools you'll use to create illustrations in Photoshop, finishing up with 2 drawing demos so you can see how it all comes together.

Photoshop for Illustrators: The Basics is all about giving you the building blocks to create a successful Photoshop art practice. Based on my experience as a children's book illustrator and licensing artist, I'll teach you what you need to know to get started illustrating in Photoshop. We'll start with simple examples and work up to a step-by-step process where I demonstrate how I use my favorite Photoshop tools in my own work.

Along the way you'll learn:

  • How to choose a drawing tablet
  • How to set up your Photoshop workspace
  • How to use basic Photoshop tools including the lasso, shape selection tools, brush tools, and pen tools, among others
  • How to choose the correct color space
  • How to set up a new document and import a sketch
  • How to use layers and groups to organize your work
  • How to color your illustrations using the lasso, marquee, shapes, pen and brush tools
  • How to use clipping masks
  • And how to make revisions to your finished work
